There was a recent Allure article featuring Jennifer Aniston journey with infertility, the hell she was going through trying to get pregnant in her late 30th, and early 40th through IVF while the whole world was judging her, closely following every step she was taking.
She speaks about her experience: “All the years and years and years of speculation... It was really hard. I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I was throwing everything at it.” We don’t talk about infertility enough and what it is to go through IVF when you are 40. But there are more than 100 million people worldwide suffering from infertility and age remains the single main factor contributing to it.
If you are past 25 years old, most likely you felt the social pressure of starting a family at some point. Colleagues, family, and friends who are married and have babies - everyone seems to have an opinion and knows when it is the right time for you. The truth is only you know when is the right time.
Let me tell you something I do not usually share. I was engaged, but I wasn’t sure I was ready. So I broke my engagement at the age of 30 leaving myself to the scary uncertainty of staying alone and not finding a partner. The social norm the society pushes on us. But it felt right for some reason even though everyone else was feeling bad for me.
Yes, definitely there is such a thing as a biological clock and the quantity and quality of eggs is getting worse after 35. But it doesn’t mean you should rush into marriage and relationships and motherhood when it is not what you want now. Instead, you can plan for it, you can invest and strategize about your future fertility and buy yourself “fertility insurance” and freeze your eggs earlier rather than later. At least that was my choice.
Every woman should know that there is a different, much better way. You can plan and invest in your fertility and preserve it before your fertility starts to rapidly decline. You can save yourself some time, money, and peace of mind. I want to second Aniston’s words: “Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.”
