Reviews

We just did our first embryo transfer with Hanabusa and are waiting for the results but I feel grateful that I chose to go with Hanabusa when embarking on my fertility journey. I feel really comfortable being there, I feel comfortable with the staff, I feel like they are on top of my bloodwork and exams, and I feel like I am being heard. It is also an amazing process seeing what modern day science is capable of. It’s been an experience I’ll never forget and I’m glad I chose this place to have that experience with. ***Update*** We welcomed our beautiful little girl to the world on November 25th 2024

After a somewhat traumatic experience at another clinic in the area and two failed transfers, I turned to Dr. Chang and Hanabusa IVF. It was night and day from what I experienced at the other clinic. First off, my consultation with Dr. Chang was thorough, and I could tell that he really cared and actually read my medical file. He genuinely seemed invested in our success. He even mentioned some alternative options to getting pregnant that we hadn't considered (other docs had told us only IVF would work for us). He also offered a truly customized plan that was much less stressful than my last protocol, and only suggested extra testing if he genuinely thought it would make a difference in my case. I never waited more than 5 minutes for an appointment or bloodwork, which was such a huge relief!! It's still relatively early in my pregnancy and we don't want to "jinx" but I just couldn't wait to write this review. I am 14 weeks pregnant with my first transfer with Dr. Chang!! If you are hesitant due to finances I TRULY understand, but I wish we had worked with this clinic from the start. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Hanabusa and Dr. Chang

I reached out to Hanabusa IVF based on their good reviews and expertise with low AMH cases. Living in South Washington, I specified during the consultation that I would need occasional support for remote monitoring, planning to come to San Diego only for the egg retrieval. My initial consultation with Dr. Leblanc was positive, and I felt hopeful. However, everything went downhill after that. When the nurses took over, communication was poor and often rude. We were told that after the consultation, all further communication would be handled by the nurses—no direct access to the doctor—which felt unreasonable considering the $20,000+ cost. Additionally, they claimed they would help set up ultrasound appointments for outside monitoring, but no one actually followed through. We were left trying to arrange these services on our own, which proved difficult, as many imaging centers and IVF clinics were not set up for this kind of remote coordination. Despite their assurances, we found no support on this front. There was also a lack of guidance with ordering medications. We were told we’d need to purchase specific medications but weren’t provided with any clarity on how to obtain them. The deal-breakers with Hanabusa IVF were: • No direct access to the doctor after the initial consultation • Unhelpful, often inadequate responses from the nurses • Failure to help us arrange outside monitoring, despite initial assurances • Lack of clarity for same-day blood tests, leading to confusion with STAT prescriptions • Much higher fees compared to other clinics After further research, I realized that Hanabusa IVF didn’t offer any unique services or benefits that justified their high costs. We ended up successfully completing our IVF journey elsewhere and at less than half of the costs. I’d encourage others to explore other clinics that provide more support for a better value.

I generally never leave reviews but my husband and I felt compelled to share our story because this place has changed our lives and could potentially help others as well. After a couple of failed IVF attempts at a different clinic we went to Dr. Chang and his team, and our experience could not have been better. Dr. Chang was extremely attentive and with us through every step of the process. He was extremely honest and candid regarding our chances of success, and we felt extremely cared for and listened to. We are now expecting our first child at the end of this year. We are forever grateful for Dr. Chang and his team. It’s hard to find the words to thank them enough. Thank you Dr Chang and Hanabusa for giving us the best gift ever!

From the beginning our doctor had a defeated attitude. On my first ultrasound she told me she was "disappointed with what she saw". IVF is very challenging and a defeated attitude from the get-go, when you are trying to create life doesn't serve anyone. As a mental health clinician I understand how important the mindset is, not to mention what you say to patients . And there was our nurse- Andrea. She was awful. No patience and she seemed to get frustrated whenever we had additional questions. For example, for our first round we had a in-person demo of how to administer the meds, as well as a video link and written instructions to refer back to- very helpful! For the second round (with new meds added) we only got an invalid video link with written instructions. We wanted at least a visual example of how to administer the meds. They're expensive, wanted to make sure we were doing them correctly! However, upon reaching out for additional support- we got nothing but attitude. It felt like pulling teeth to get that assistance. Then we made a mistake administering one of our meds. I then reached out, worried we had messed up the dosage. Called the front desk- they were wonderful-patient and understanding with our concern after explaining. Upon receiving a return call, I explained to Andrea "I'm not sure if the front desk explained the situation?" (In an effort to save time and not re-explain how we fudged the meds) she responded with "Um no but if you want-I can hang up with you, go talk to the front desk and then call you back!" And it wasn't in a nice way. After already being stressed about administering the meds wrong we get her condescending attitude. This is what we dealt with with our nurse. All the other nurses we experienced were great. After explaining the situation to the office manager Karen and expressing we were uncomfortable continuing with Andrea we requested to change nurses. She refused and kept making excuses “oh that's just Andrea's personality" And never once apologized. Then they charged us for an unused "calcium bath" that was to be used for the 2nd round Egg Retrieval, which we decided to forgo, due to the fact that there was only 1 mature follicle. We called and explained our concerns. Karen was somewhat receptive, but also tried to sway us "you know it only takes one, that could be the one!"We requested an additional monitoring and got in with Dr Chang. He was great! He gave us options and shared it was "reasonable" to be concerned and not wanting to proceed with this round. He gave us 3 options to proceed: 1) timed intercourse, 2) IUI, 3) IVF and we were instructed to let them know once I ovulated/ we decided. The next week we were billed by Effie in billing- for an unused calcium bath. I asked her to remove the charge and she said she'd talk to her supervisor and get back to me. This was on a Monday. We waited for an answer in regard to removing the charge. Friday when I ovulated and contacted them via the portal like we always did for our next steps, instead of getting a response for the next steps in our pregnancy plan, we get this message from Effie "I will suspend service until balance is clear" really? This woman has just hijacked our plan for $300-400?? That the last time I checked, you were waiting to hear back from your supervisor? This is how we get our answer? You hijacking our pregnancy plan? At that point we had already dropped $13-15k and our balance was always paid within a week/week and half. Not only that- I'd overhead other patients in office, one lady had over $2k balance and I overheard her say "I'll pay it next time". So here we are being harassed for a $300-400 med that was unused, meanwhile some patients get the benefit of the doubt- "to pay later" so I've witnessed first-hand. Where's the consistency? Where's the professionalism? This is something the business could've easily written off. We were treated poorly. We just expected more. After reading all of the great reviews we were so disappointed with our experience. We left. We never got a response or apology.
